Since the introduction of GDPR in May 2018, UK companies have worked hard to meet compliance. Furthermore, they have adjusted everyday duties, analysed procedures, and implemented customer data policies.

Whilst these exercises are a step in the right direction, customer service departments should continue their efforts regularly. By monitoring their handling of customer data they can create a successful data protection environment for their customers. Subsequently, this will not to leave themselves short to the likes of a vulnerable cyber threat.

In their “Guide to Data Protection”, the ICO recommends that businesses and organisations follow the DPA 2018 framework for data protection which sits alongside UK GDPR.

They state that:

  1. Good Data Protection ensures that people trust that their data is being handled fairly and responsibly.
  2. Compliance should be met if you collect information about individuals for any reason other than your own personal, family or household purposes.
  3. Under DPA 2018 and UK GDPR, businesses and organisations must take a flexible, risk-based approach. Adapting a primary focus on consideration and justification as to how and why the data should be used.
  4. The ICO regulating authority for data protection, offers businesses and organisations “advice and guidance, promotes good practice, carry out audits, consider complaints, monitor compliance and take enforcement action where appropriate”.
